Staff Report

After defeating Asheville Home School in the first round of its conference tournament Friday evening, the Surry Home Educator Runnin Patriots boys basketball team had to turn around and play No. 1 seeded Davidson just a few hours afterwards, with Davidson coming into the game fresh.
Despite the disadvantage in preparation time, the Runnin Pats put forth a strong effort but could not come out on top, losing a heartbreaker, 84-83.
Defense was not a focus in the high-scoring matchup with both teams putting at least four players in double figures.
The up and down contest ended with Davidson big man R.J. Knowles hitting one-of-two free throws to give his team the 84-83 advantage with 25 seconds left to play.
The Pats had a chance to win the game, however it missed on two separate opportunities.
Despite the loss, coach Lin Hamilton said he was proud of his team for gutting it out at a high level after already playing one tough game earlier in the night.
I was really proud of them, Hamilton said. The effort they gave was phenomenal. I know they were tired.
Surrys Luke Hamilton finished with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four steals in the loss. Daniel Shaeffer also put in a top effort, nearly picking up a triple-double, finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Surry also got double-figure games from Chris Brantley (13 points) and Aaron Gibbons (10 points).
Davidson was led by Spencer Moore with 20 and Ryan Loftis with 16 points.
Surry couldnt rest long, turning around the following evening to take on Cabarrus in the conference third-place consolation game, which they won, 72-61.
Luke Hamilton led the Patriots in the win with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Behind Hamilton was Daniel Shaeffer with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
For his three-game performance, Hamilton was named to the all-tournament team.
Surry will next travel to Knoxville March 7 to take part in a tournament, then it will play in an east coast home educators tournament later in the month.
