A wreck that took place early Saturday morning by Interstate 77 claimed the life of a Florida man.
Jacob Daniel Griggs, 26, of Green Cove, Fla., died after his Chevrolet pickup truck collided with a tractor trailer on the exit 83 ramp off of I-77 North. The wreck occurred at 1:54 a.m.
John Shelton, Surry County EMS director, said a tractor trailer for OReilly Auto Parts was exiting I-77 onto the Highway 21 exit when Griggs drove the wrong way down the ramp, colliding with the trailer.
The trailer driver was not in critical condition but was taken to Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Griggs died at the scene.
North Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the wreck. Shelton said it is not known why Griggs went the wrong way to access I-77.
The tractor trailer was hauling car batteries, but they all remained in their containers. Shelton said the wreck was cleared up by 4:35 a.m.; only diesel fuel spilled from the truck. Carolina Environmental Services workers will be cleaning up the fuel on the ramp and grass over the next week.
Traffic did not stop on I-77, but workers did have to close the ramp to exit 83 while they cleaned up the wreckage.
First responders to the wreck were CC Camp Volunteer Fire Department, Elkin and Dobson rescue squads, EMS, and highway patrol.
