The Mount Airy boys tennis team held its annual banquet Tuesday evening and, like the season itself, the team was bestowed with numerous awards.
Northwest 1A Conference Player of the Year Nick John was a force all season long as the No. 1 singles player for the Granite Bears, as well as pairing up with Brooks Mayberry to form a state-champion doubles team. Although he was not allowed to participate in the singles edition of the NCHSAA 1A singles tournament, John holds a decisive win over state champion Akash Dadlani of Albemarle. NCHSAA rules prohibit players from competing as a singles player and as part of a doubles team in the same tournament.
Five players were named to the all-conference team: John, Mayberry, Chance Hall, Matt Kessler and Eric Belton. Kessler won the conference singles title.
Alex Ilyasov earned a nod as honorable mention all-conference.
Awards handed out by the team included most valuable player (John), most improved player (Belton) and the coachs award (Kessler). Senior Nathan Hagar received the Charlotte Yokely Award.
