PILOT MOUNTAIN Mr. David W. Willard, 66, of Pilot Mountain, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at his home. He was born June 7, 1942, in Forsyth County to Pearl Bates Willard and the late Nicholas William Willard. David served his country in the U.S. Army, and after being released, he began working as a case worker with the Surry County Department of Social Services and remained in that position for over four years. He furthered his career working for the N.C. Probation Commission as a probation officer where he served until 1990 then was promoted to an intensive case officer. Then in 1993 was promoted to judicial district manager, Judicial District 17B, for over 23 years. In 2007, David retired and was presented with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. David was a well-known figure in the town of Pilot Mountain and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother, Pearl Willard; one sister, Linda W. Cotts (David) of Alexandria, Va.; three nephews; two nieces; four great-nieces; two great-nephews; and special friends, Robert Gordon Jr. (Mary), Mike Royster (Sue) and family, Steve Royster, Leonard Goins and I.G. Patel. Mr. Willard was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Mary Catherine Gordon; and one infant brother. The funeral will be held Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Sherrill officiating with interment to follow in the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery. The body will lie in state on Sunday, April 5, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CoxNeedham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 818, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Mountain Valley Hospice, family and friends for all of their care and concern.
