The North Surry wrestling team lost half of its starters from a season ago, but judging by Tuesdays results, it is hard to notice. The host Greyhounds (1-0) began the season with a 63-6 win over East Wilkes.
North Surrys dominant performance included eight pins and three wins by forfeit. The Greyhounds swept every match from 130 to 275 pounds.
We looked good for it to be as early as it is in the season, North Surry coach Eric Jessup said. We still got a lot of work to get where we want to be.
Of the 14 weight classes designated in high school wrestling, the Greyhounds lost seven of their starters from a season ago. Jessup said North Surry, which won the Mountain Valley crown and was undefeated for a large portion of the season, has younger wrestlers fighting to fill the voids.
Weve got some really good young kids to come in to fill those spots, Jessup said, and theyre working really hard.
The Greyhounds next match is 7 p.m. Wednesday at Starmount.
