Emma Claire Merritt and Powell Keeling Baggett were married on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Mount Airy. The Rev. John Ferree officiated. A reception followed the ceremony at the home of the brides parents.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Leonidas Merritt Jr. of Mount Airy. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Otto Mock Sr. of Brunswick, Ga., and the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Leonidas Merritt Sr. of Mount Airy.
The groom is the son of Gayle Powell Watson and Dr. and Mrs. Henry Clifford Baggett of Raleigh. He is the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Leonard Powell of Ruffin, the late Dr. and Mrs. Robert E. Balsley of Reidsville, and the late Henry C. Baggett Sr. of Reidsville.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore a lace mantilla belonging to the grooms mother. She was attended by Mary Ellen Graham of Fort Mill, S.C., as matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Alma Margaret Arnold and Katherine Seaton Granelli of Charlotte; Jamie Blair Arton of Raleigh; Margaret Caroline Beasley, Elizabeth Elaine Cuenin, Hannah Garland Ellis and Elizabeth Kristine Young, all of New York, N.Y.; Emily Jackson Calloway of Jacksonville, Fla.; Elizabeth Brooks Johnson of Charleston, S.C.; Kathryn Davault Nowell of Atlanta; and Cristen Windham Sessions of Winston-Salem.
The grooms father served as best man. Groomsmen were Henry Clifford Baggett III, brother of the groom, of Bangkok, Thailand; Copeland Craig Cherry of Chapel Hill; David Murchison Eggleston of Wilmington; Duncan McLaurin Gibson, William Richard Gwathmey, Dustin Michael Locklear and Edward Leonidas Merritt, brother of the bride, all of Raleigh; James Graham Kenan IV of Charleston, S.C.; Jordan Norfleet Phillips of Charlotte; William James Stallworth of Atlanta; and Gregory Vick Wilson of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Flower girls were Elisi Kay Baggett of Bangkok and Laura Lillian Baggett of Raleigh, nieces of the groom. Wyatt Powell Baggett of Raleigh, nephew of the groom, served as ring bearer.
Registry and program attendants were Mary Margaret Hand of Brunswick, Ga., cousin of the bride; and Carlee Margarett Baggett of Raleigh, niece of the groom.
Ceremony music was performed by Susan Orgain, organist; Ken Wilmot and Karl Kassner, trumpeters; and Elizabeth Martin, soloist.
On Friday evening, the grooms parents hosted the rehearsal dinner at Cross Creek Country Club, which was followed by a dance hosted by family and friends of the bride and groom.
A bridesmaids luncheon, hosted by friends of the brides mother, was held at the home of Pam Yokley Greenwood on Friday morning. On Thursday evening, friends of the brides parents hosted a barbecue at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Appler.
The bride graduated from Salem Academy and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law. She was presented by the Terpsichorean Club of Raleigh at the 2000 North Carolina Debutante Ball. She is an attorney with Tuggle Duggins in Greensboro.
The groom graduated from Woodberry Forest School and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a student at Elon University School of Law.
Following a wedding trip to Asheville, the couple will reside in Greensboro.
