DOBSONMr. Curtiss Hoover Sutphin, 80, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born on March 31, 1929, in Carroll County, Va., to the late Ewell Lee and Lubenda Eula Bowman Sutphin. Mr. Sutphin bravely served his country as a U.S. Marine during the Cuban Crisis, the Korean and Vietnam wars receiving numerous decorations and also a member of the DAV. Mr. Sutphin is survived by a daughter, Emma Woods of Tucson, Ariz.; son, Terrence Sutphin of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren; sister, Irene Payne of Lancaster, S.C.; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutphin was preceded in death by a sister, Athylene Hatcher. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Moody Funeral Home conducted by Chaplain Jerry Keegans. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery with full military rites conducted by VFW Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
