KING Hayley Shelton limited West Stokes scoring chances and the Cardinals made the most of their opportunities at the plate, with East Surry taking down West Stokes, 5-1 in a non-conference showdown.
Shelton struck out 14 and walked just one while giving up only three hits. West committed three errors, which allowed the Cardinals to bring home several runs.
East Surry coach Derrick Hill said Friday served as a way for his team to face some tough competition heading into the postseason.
Thats what we needed getting ready for the conference tournament and the state playoffs, not to mention they are going to be in our conference next season, Hill said. They are a good ball team and they have a good coach and good players.
Hill added that while his teams offensive run production was down from recent games, he thought his players performed well and did what it took to go home a winner.
We didnt get a lot of hits, but our kids stepped up and we got hits when we needed to, he said. Thats what we are looking for this time of year.
East managed to string together three straight hits in the top of the second inning to pick up its first two runs.
The Cardinals were quiet until the top of the sixth when seniors Paige Honeycutt and Courtney Simmons landed on second and third with two outs. Samantha Smith then knocked a bloop single to drive in Honeycutt and Simmons and push the Cardinals lead to 4-0.
East would push across another run in the inning and it proved to be enough, with Shelton shutting the door and coming away with the win.
For East, Samantha Smith finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs, followed by Beth Isaacs (1-for-3 2 RBIs) and Julie Bullington (1-for-2, RBI).
The Cardinals will host Elkin Monday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the Northwest 1A Conference tournament.
