PILOT MOUNTAIN The East Surry and Elkin boys basketball teams broke out of a rut to produce a high-scoring fourth quarter, as the Cardinals prevailed for a 49-35 win Wednesday night.
Ryan Johnson scored all 10 of his points in the final frame. Andrew Hunter, who had a game-high 14, added six points in the fourth when the Cardinals racked up 22 points to the visitors 17. In the other three quarters, Easts 10-point first was the highest scoring and the only quarter of the first three in which either team reached double digits.
We just didnt play well as a group, East Surry coach Jason Anderson said. I dont know if it was lagging over and we just put so much effort into last night (against Winston-Salem Prep) and our legs were gone, but that should not be the case with as many people as we have.
Anderson subbed five players at a time and used a ball-control offense that slowed the game considerably. In the second quarter, the Cardinals held the ball for nearly three minutes during one possession. Elkin scored two points in that quarter.
Anderson said slowing the game was necessary.
We had to because we couldnt hit a two-foot shot, he said. If you cant hit them, you dont want to get up and down the floor.
If were not hitting them, thats what were going to do. Were going to back the ball out. If you got a lead, keep it. Dont give it away.
Elkins size in the middle altered more than a few shots, as East players tried to duck under limbs and weave around bigger bodies.
They did some things to cause us to miss some shots, but we missed a lot of easy looks around the basket. And to beat good ball teams, you cant miss those shots. We got lucky tonight with a win, but we cant continue to play that way.
