New hours have been announced for the Mount Airy Recycling Collection Center on Riverside Drive in conjunction with the start of Daylight Saving Time Sunday.
Effective Tuesday, the recycling center will operate on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This schedule will remain in effect until Nov. 1 at the facility, near J.J. Jones Intermediate School.
It accepts all aluminum items, including beverage cans, which must be separated from other aluminum materials.
Cardboard brought to the facility can include gray cardboard (cereal and cracker boxes) and corrugated, but must be clean, dry and flattened.
Mixed paper, white and colored, also is accepted along with newsprint, including inserts, and magazines, which all can be bundled or loose.
Glass can be recycled at the site as well, but is limited to containers. Lids must be removed and the containers rinsed and sorted by color. No lightbulbs, window glass, dishes or Pyrex products are accepted.
Acceptable plastics include bottles and jugs (numbers 1, 2 and 3 only), but no Styrofoam, grocery bags or other plastic items.
The list further includes appliances such as washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, which must have food and other objects removed.
Batteries are not accepted at the Mount Airy facility, but the Surry County Landfill at Holly Springs receives all types for recycling.
