North Surry came out on top of another nail biter of a tennis match Friday, taking out visiting Starmount, 5-4.
One day after beating Forbush by the same score, North had basically an identical scoring summary against the Rams, splitting the singles matches 3-3 before pulling off two of three doubles matches to come away with the win.
Starmounts Corey Campbell remained undefeated in conference play against North Surrys number one seed, Austin Warren (6-2, 6-1), while the Greyhounds second seed, Dylan ONeal rallied from a 1-5 deficit in a third set tiebreaker only to lose to Starmounts Zac McCullogh, 7-5.
North picked up wins from Tyler Davis and Nik Morgan, with Davis defeating Cole Johns, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), and Morgan taking out Julio Jimenez 7-5, 6-1 to even the team scoring at 2-2, while Norths Brandon Orndorff took home his seventh singles win of the season, defeating Stephen Kurtz 6-3, 6-1.
Tied 3-3 entering doubles play, the Greyhounds number one team of Warren and Davis lost 8-4 to give Starmount the lead, but another strong performance by the teams of ONeal and Morgan and C.J. Hunter and Orndorff allowed North to come away with the victory.
ONeal and Morgan fell behind 3-4 in their match but broke Starmounts Jimenez and Kurtzs serve at 5-6 and held serve at 6-6. Up 7-6 they trailed love-40 before winning five consecutive points to break the Rams serve and win the match.
The match was the third in three days for the Greyhounds, who now sit at 5-5 overall and 5-5 in the Mountain Valley 2-A Conference.
North will host Ashe County Monday.
