Six area girls make all-district

The Northwest 1-A and Mountain Valley 2-A conferences dominated the District 11 All-District teams recently released by the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association (NCBCA), picking up 13 of the 15 available spots.
District 11 is made up of 35 schools from 11 counties which include Alleghany, Alexander, Ashe, Caldwell, Davie, Iredell, Rowan, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin.
Six players were selected from the Mount Airy News coverage area, which includes, Mount Airy, North Surry, Surry Central and East Surry.
Mountain Valley 2-A champion Ashe County swept the awards for most valuable player and coach, with the Huskiess Kim McNeil picking up player of the year, while coach Laura Foster was tagged as 2008-2009 coach of the year.
East Surrys Kelsey Long and North Surrys Emily Culler were selected to the all-district first team, along with Kelli Bonner of Starmount, Jessica Brown of West Stokes, and McNeil of Ashe County.
Long was also selected as the Northwest 1-A girls player of the year, while Culler picked up MVC 2-A all-conference honors.
Taylor Hiatt of Mount Airy, Nicole Rumplasch of North Surry and Courtney Simmons of East Surry picked up second-team honors and were joined by Mallary Clay of Ashe County and Julianna Prim of Starmount.
Hiatt, Rumplasch and Simmons were all selected to their respective all-conference teams to go along with the all-district honors.
Maggie McKee of Mount Airy was the only area selection to the third-team and was joined by Kelsey Hawks of West Stokes, Haley Williams and Katie Ryder of Wilkes Central and Racheal Salmons of Forbush.
