– A Mount Airy man was served with a warrant charging him with trafficking in methamphetamine, a felony, after being arrested in Pilot Mountain during the weekend, according to the Mount Airy Police Department. Jose Hernandez Valdez, 23, of 199 West Hampton Lane, was taken into custody at an Exxon station on South Key Street in Pilot Mountain late Saturday, then was served with the felony warrant that had been issued on Feb. 12 by a Mount Airy narcotics officer.
Valdez was confined in the Surry County Jail in lieu of a $48,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
– More than $1,000 in cash and a large number of credit cards were among the items reported missing Saturday from a break-in of the 2007 Ford Expedition of Gilmer Lewis Key and Judy Pratt Key of Ararat which involved the theft of a purse and two billfolds. The incident occurred while the secured vehicle was parked at Bannertown Baptist Church on Westfield Road between 4:45 and 7 p.m. In addition to $1,330, 15 credit cards, a debit card, a cell phone, a checkbook, a drivers license, keys and other items were taken. The case remains open for further investigation.
– A Coach-brand pocketbook valued at $600 was reported stolen Saturday at Creekside Cinema on Bluemont Road. The pocketbook owned by Donna Jean Thompson of Wilkesboro was taken from the lobby area of the theater between 5 and 7:15 p.m. It contained a debit card, drivers license, small amount of currency and other items. The case remains open for further investigation.
– Violations of larceny and attempting to buy cigarettes while underage were issued Saturday against Justin Edward Collier, 16, of 921 N. South St., after he allegedly tried to steal cigarettes and buy others at a store at 449 N. Andy Griffith Parkway and was confronted by the owner. Collier is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on March 4.
