Baker swims strong for STAR

CARY Paced by Kathleen Bakers eight first-place finishes, High Point’s STAR Aquatics finished seventh out of 20 teams at the North Carolina Long Course State Championship meet held from July 16-19 in Cary.
Competing in the 11- and 12-year-old girls division, Baker won the 100-meter fly (1 minute, 7.52 seconds); 400 freestyle (4:39.72); 100 backstroke (1:06.89); 200 Intermediate Medley (2:25.81); 50 backstroke (30.95); 50 fly (29.96); 200 backstroke (2:26.18); and the 200 breaststroke (2:49.99). Her 100 backstroke was a new state record and she set a new standard in the 200 backstroke as well. She also took second place in the 50 breaststroke (36.13) and the 100 breaststroke (1:18.59).
The star for the boys was Levente Bathory, who claimed five gold medals in the 10-and-under boys division. He took first in the 50 freestyle (31.25); 50 breaststroke (44.61); 200 freestyle (2:26.99); 200 IM (2:47.57); and 100 freestyle (1:08.66). He also placed second in the 100 fly (1:16.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:34.52).
Faith Johnson (13 and 14 girls) won gold in the 50 (26.64) and 100 (57.64) freestyles. The 100 freestyle set a state record.
Alistair Stephens-Pickeral was first in the 100 (1:18.10) and 200 (2:49.65) breaststroke. STAR girls occupied first, second and third on the podium after the 200 breaststroke when Stephens-Pickeral won the gold, Susannah Thorne got the silver and Caroline Neil took home the bronze.
