Mount Airy loss ends baseball season

ALBEMARLE The Mount Airy baseball team came close to producing a tremendous come-from-behind victory Friday night against Albemarle in the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs. The comeback was not meant to be, however, and the Granite Bears season ended with a 4-3 setback.
After falling behind 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, the visiting Granite Bears came to bat in the top of the seventh with a sense of urgency. After a Nathan Welch walk and pinch-hit single from Josh Beasley, Christian Easter cleared the bases with a three-run home run. But Mount Airy could not follow up Easters blast and ended the game with two strikeouts.
The game was postponed until 8:45 p.m. Friday night after rain swept through the area. After that, the field took on a haunted feeling.
The sprinklers turned on in the fifth, causing a delay in play. After that, the lights went off.
No matter the loss, Mount Airy coach Mack Hodges was happy with the way the team played this year.
Im proud of the kids for everything theyve done this year, he said. Weve had a pretty successful season. Theyve worked hard to turn the program around.
