CANIPE
SHELBY Mr. John Wilbur Canipe, born Feb. 19, 1921, in Hollis, passed away Oct. 30, 2009, at Hospice Cleveland County. He was the third child of the late Bert and Carrie Mae Canipe. Mr. Canipe served in the U.S. Army, with the 98th Division 391st Infantry, 2nd Battalion Company G, Third Squadron, along with about 400 men. His tour of duty included the Hawaiian Islands and Japan. He retired from Kendall Drug Company in June 1990 with 40 years of service. Most recently, he retired from Shelby City Park, where he worked in the golf shop, continuing his love of golf, which he played for over 50 years. He married Mary Helen Wood (deceased) of Lenoir June 28, 1942. His son, Ronald G. Canipe, preceded him in death along with two infant children, Kit and Chris Canipe. He is survived by one daughter, Sue Ellen Wimbish and husband Richard Wimbish of Mount Airy; a daughter-in-law, Nell Alderman Canipe of Shelby; and grandchildren, Jessica C. Bridges and husband Sid, Jonathan Canipe and wife Jessie, Katie Calloway Saunders and husband Matthew Saunders and Andrew and John Preston Calloway. He married Jean S. Canipe on May 30, 1992. His children by marriage are Betsy Sowers Crow (deceased) and son-in-law John Crow of Shelby, Sarah S. Svendsen and husband Hugh of Chapel Hill and Carol S. Appling and husband Rex of Shelby; great-grandchildren, Carter and Cooper Bridges, Taylor Canipe and Andrew Preston Saunders; brothers, now deceased, Walter, Raymond and Charles (Bus) Canipe; and one sister, Sarah Mae Dean Smith, formerly of Shelby, survives. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Estelle Canipe, Helen Canipe, Evelyn Canipe and Joyce Andrews and husband Joe of Charlotte; and grandchildren by marriage, Zane and Seth Crow, Claire, Blake and Brett Svendsen and Hannah and Jake Appling. Family graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Ellis Hall at Shelby Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen, 226 E.
