Mount Airy police have made an arrest stemming from a rash of check-forgeries earlier this year.
Hope Hawks Hemric, 32, of 383 Splitrail Road in Cana, Va., was arrested Thursday and charged with forgery and uttering of an instrument, a felony. Hemric was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $40,000 secured bond.
The arrest resulted from an investigation launched by city police after they learned on Feb. 5 that Surrey Bank and Trust on Rockford Street had been victimized by a series of incidents during January in which checks were forged and cashed. They were drawn on the account of a man who lives on Cedar Ridge Road.
At the time of the initial report, police indicated that the case involved $1,219 being illegally obtained through the forgery of eight separate checks that had been recovered by the bank at that point. However, arrest records released by police this week show that about 15 checks actually were involved, the total value of which was unavailable.
The Cana woman surfaced as a possible suspect early on and she was arrested in Mount Airy Thursday afternoon.
Hemric, who was still in custody Friday, is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on April 28.
