Historian Thomas D. Tom Perry announced the release of two books and two DVDs about regional history. Perry has 12 titles in print, ten books and two DVDs, all available regionally at various book sellers and at www.amazon.com and Perrys www.freestateofpatrick.com.
The Patrick County Oral History Project: A Guide contains information on the oral history interviews from nearly 30 years ago conducted in Patrick County. These interviews of more than 100 persons are housed today in the Carol M. Newman Library at Virginia Tech, where Perrys papers reside as well.
Perry will donate all profit from this book to the special collections department of the Newman Library, to take the recordings from tape to digital format.
The guide contains information on each interview along with abstracts and an index. Parts of the recordings have been transcribed into book form, but not all. The cost of the book is $9.99.0
J. E. B. Stuart Birthplace: A Guide for Educators and Visitors is a new book aimed at tourists and educators taken from Perrys more than 20 years researching the site. Perry started the preservation effort to preserve the 75 acre site in 1990 and is the author of J. E. B. Stuarts Birthplace: The History of the Laurel Hill Farm that tells the story of the Stuart Family from their arrival in America until today. It is also a history of the site and the effort to preserve it.
The book includes three driving tours from Mount Airy, Meadows of Dan, Va. and Stuart, Va., with history along the way to the site of the Laurel Hill Farm in Ararat, Va. The cost of the book is $9.99. The cover features the artwork of local artist Pat Gwyn Woltz. Her painting Laurel Hill 1842 features young Jeb Stuart knocking down a hornets nest at his birthplace at age nine.
Perry and Woltz will be together during the Autumn Leaves Festival in Mount Airy at Talleys Frame Shop on Main Street.
