Mount Airy achieved something Monday night it hadnt done in womens tennis in more than two years; beat North Stokes.
The Granite Bears, ranked second in North Carolinas 1A classification, finally got the monkey off their back with a 6-3 win over the visiting No. 7 ranked Vikings.
North handed Mount Airy its only loss earlier this season and coach Scott Kniskern said its encouraging to see his team defeat someone who has had their number for several seasons.
Its a big win, especially for my girls that came back from last year, Kniskern said. Since Ive been the coach we hadnt beaten North Stokes. I think that was a mental thing we had to get past but everyone stepped up and did a great job tonight to pull out the win.
Mount Airy led 4-2 heading into doubles play, but Kniskern said he was still a little worried considering the Vikings swept his team in their previous meeting. But Mount Airys doubles team of Ellie Case and Jordan Gwyn gave their team the win quick, defeating Jordan Wilkins and Taylor York of North Stokes 10-3 to secure the overall team victory.
That was a big one, Kniskern said. Ellie and Jordan had only lost one doubles match all season and that was to the number one North Stokes team earlier. They really wanted to come out and beat them and it was doubly important because we needed a win and didnt want to get swept again.
Mount Airy improves to 10-1 overall and 9-1 in Northwest 1A/2A Conference play. They will travel to 4A West Forsyth today before facing North Surry away Thursday.

Cards sink Sauras, 7-2
PILOT MOUNTAIN East Surry knew the overall match outcome with South Stokes before doubles play began Monday, with the Cardinals sweeping the Sauras 6-0 in singles on the way to a 7-2 win.
The win pushes East to 8-4 overall and 7-4 in Northwest 1A/2A Conference play.
With such a strong conference (the Northwest has three of the top 10 teams in North Carolina), the Cardinals need to find wins wherever they can to keep themselves in the state dual playoff picture.
East Surry coach Phil Jordan said he was happy with his teams play Monday and thinks the Cardinals have shown promise.
We played well and weve gotten better over the course of the year, Jordan said. We had a good match at North Stokes and even though they beat us, it was close throughout. A lot of it could have gone either way. Weve gotten better but our problem is we just havent been able to beat North Stokes or Mount Airy.
The Cardinals will take on Bishop McGuinness Tuesday before facing the Sauras again Thursday in Walnut Cove. East will travel to Mount Airy Oct. 8 in the last conference match of the season.
