ROANOKE, Va. The Surry Runnin Patriot boys dropped a halftime lead before losing to Southwest Virginia (Roanoke) in overtime Tuesday, 60-53.
Surrys Luke Hamilton scored a game-high 37 points in the losing effort, carrying his team offensively, which had trouble holding onto the ball and knocking down crucial free throws late in the contest.
After leading 31-21 at the half, Surry had a less than stellar third quarter, allowing Roanoke take a three point lead heading into the final period.
Surry took a six point lead mid-way through the fourth, but missed opportunties at the free throw line and turnovers allowed Roanoke to stay in it after hitting a 3-pointer at the end of regulation.
If the third quarter was bad, the overtime was worse, as Surry managed just one point and gave away the win.
Weve got to keep our possession and work the ball and get a good shot, coach Lin Hamilton said. They really put a lot of pressure on us. We tried to force it a time or two and had a couple of turnovers in the overtime and that was the difference in the game.
Luke Hamilton had six rebounds to go along with his 37 points, while Aaron Gibbons led Surry with nine boards. Austin Lester had a solid all-around performance, finishing with six points, six steals, seven assists and seven rebounds.
Surry drops to 3-9 overall and will next play at the Piedmont Classic in Winston-Salem Jaunary 7 and 8.
