Hundreds of people visited the new Salvation Army Family Store Friday for its grand opening.
Between 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., Capt. Mike Rodgers estimates that 333 people entered the store and purchased something. That does not include the people who did not make a purchase. The new store is located at 541 W. Pine St. Suite 200. It is located in the same building as the North Carolina Employment Security Commission.
I was very concerned. Any time you move a store, theres a whole lot of expense, Rodgers said of relocating the store from its N. South Street address.
However, he has been pleased with the turnout on opening day as well as the response of the community to help get the store ready in time.
Its taken many hours. There were a couple of weeks we were here from seven in the morning until late in the evenings getting set up. People really rolled up their sleeves and helped us, he said. Here, Im in love. There was no issue getting people there with a few minutes notice.
Rodgers has only been in Mount Airy a couple of weeks as he and wife, Susan, replaced Ray Morton and his wife, Whitney, as captains of the local Salvation Army. This is the sixth store he has been in charge of and he said he has been blown away by the tremendous outpouring of support.
Salvation Army officials made the move with the hope that the new store location will better serve the community. Other than the need to increase the number of lights in the store, Rodgers says he is pleased with the results and is working with an electrician to solve that problem soon.
The new store will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
