The Mount Airy girls tennis team advanced to the NCHSAA 1A western regional semifinals with a 6-0 demolition of visiting Avery County Wednesday.
The Bears recorded a clean sweep of the six singles matches. Facing a long drive home and no chance of a win, Avery County declined the play the three doubles matches.
Beginning Friday, select Granite Bears players will participate in the overlapping NCHSAA individual tournament beginning Friday at 10 a.m. in Cary.

If it was indeed the last game of the season, the Mount Airy boys soccer team made it a good one with a 7-0 victory over host North Surry Wednesday.
The Granite Bears (7-11-3, 6-8-1 Northwest 1A/2A) got two goals apiece from Andrew Belk and Dylan Mason. Also finding the net were Torrance Hamilton, Chase Pilcher and Caleb Bentley. Hamiltons score was assisted by Nathan Welch.
The NCHSAA 1A playoff pairings will be announced Sunday and the Granite Bears have a slim chance of getting an invite. Even if they dont play another game, Mount Airy coach Eric Leathers said he was proud of his team this year.
I think we overcame a lot of injuries, we overcame a lot of folks playing new positions, he said. I think the seniors did a great job of preparing the underclassmen for next season… No matter if we won or lost we had a lot of fun.
