MORAVIAN FALLS Surry Central fell behind 21-0 early in the second quarter before losing, 48-22, at Wilkes Central Friday night.
The Golden Eagles (0-3) threw two interceptions and fumbled, leading to short fields and quick points for the Eagles. Even when things went right for Surry Central, they still ended up wrong.
The Golden Eagles defense stuffed Wilkes Central on a fourth-and-goal play, causing a fumble in the process. Unfortunately, one of the home teams linemen fell on the ball in the end zone.
For a team that has struggled stopping opponents, falling behind early was the last thing the Golden Eagles needed.
We started off very slowly and dug ourselves in a hole, Surry Central coach Monty Southern said. When you play a team thats got athletes and you fall down 21-0, thats a pretty tall hill to climb.
Dave Wilmoth rushed for two of the Golden Eagles scores, while cousin Alex Wilmoth was on the other end of a Dave Wilmoth 35-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Jose Diaz booted a 37-yard field goal.
Surry Central has found a way to score points the past two weeks, but never more than the other team. Southern said the Golden Eagles need to make a priority of stopping their foes best players.
Right now were scoring some points, Southern said. …were just not stopping anybody.
