Cards trail, then respond

WALNUT COVE It may seem hard to imagine, but the East Surry softball team actually trailed when they fell behind 1-0 to South Stokes in the second game of Tuesdays double header. And get this: It was the first time all season the Cardinals (17-2, 14-0) trailed in Northwest 1A conference play. East Surry won the first game handily, 17-1, but the second game proved more challenging before it turned into a 12-2 rout.
Obviously we took care of business in the first game, East Surry coach Derrick Hill said. We came out in the second and I thought we were flat from the get go.
Order was quickly restored in the second game, when Courtney Simmons homered to lead off the Cardinals half of the first. However, the score remained at that deadlock until the fourth, when the Sauras scored again. The Cardinals answered with a five runs in each of the next two innings.
I thought they responded well to being challenged, Hill said.
Simmons homered in each game, as did Morgan Chilton, who cranked a grand slam in the first game.
East hosts Bishop McGuinness at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.
