Submissions to the community calendar need to be in writing and arrive or be brought into The Mount Airy News office before 5 p.m. at least five days before the event should appear in the newspaper. Be sure to include the full name and address of the event; the time, day and date of the event; and a contact phone number in case our staff has any questions. Every Saturday night, Dobson Rescue Squad Inc. hosts bingo with cash prizes. The bingo is at the Dobson Rescue Squad at U.S. 601 and Rockford Road. Early birds start at 5 p.m. Regular pack begins at 7 p.m. The late bingo depends on the number of players. The regular pack is nine games for $20. The players game is $5. A child pack, for children 13 and under, is $5. Concessions are sold on site by Dobson Rescue. For more information, call 374-4100.
Stewarts Creek Ruritan Club in Lambsburg, Va., will raffle off 20 silver dollars in groups of five as a kickoff to a series of fundraising activities. Tickets are $1 and drawings will be held every third week. Money raised will be used for operating expenses and community projects. For more information, contact Martin Shatley at (276) 755-0158.
Jamming in Jamsburg in Lambsburg, Va., is held every Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Community Center. Bluegrass, old-time, gospel and other types of music will be playing. Situated at the foot of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and surrounded by the mountains makes a beautiful backdrop for the jam. Theres plenty of space indoors and outdoors. There are concessions with the clean entertainment for the whole family. All musicians and music lovers are invited to come play, dance or just listen and enjoy. Admission is free, and concessions are available.

The Foothills Blues Society has a Blues Jam every second and fourth Tuesday at B52s, 972 U.S. 52 in Mount Airy, from 8 p.m. until. The society is seeking new members. Musicians and blues fans are welcome.

The Copeland Ruritan club will host a big country breakfast at the Ruritan Building. Country ham, sausage, biscuits, gravy, eggs, apples and grits will be served. Donations will be taken. Proceeds go to fun community projects.
Jan. 4
The Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes Counties will have its quarterly meeting from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the Danbury Public Library, 100 Main Street, Danbury. The public is invited to attend. There is no charge. Members of the society will be available to answer any questions on researching your family tree. Light refreshments will be provided.
Jan. 5 and 6
Audition for the Surry Arts Councils big Spring musical: Disneys Beauty and the Beast. Auditions will be held at The Andy Griffith Playhouse at on Monday at 6 p.m. and Tuesday at 7 p.m. Roles are available for ages 10 and up, with primary roles for older teenagers and adults. Strong male actors who can sing and dance are especially encouraged to audition. Everyone should bring 16 bars of song ready to sing, with sheet music if possible. Wear comfortable clothes, and prepare to read from script and perform a few dance steps, per instruction. Call-backs will be following initial auditions. Anyone interested in helping backstage or play in the orchestra should also come to auditions to get signed up. Performance dates for Beauty and the Beast are March 13, 14 and 15. You are invited to an opening reception for the Local Quilters Show from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Foothills Arts Council, 129 Church St., Elkin. The Surry County Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in the Teaching Auditorium at Surry Community College. The speaker will be Joe Hicks who will speak on the History of Rockford that was the county seat. This meeting is free and everyone is invited. For more information, call 786-2545.
