The Mount Airy Girls were obviously not affected by the Christmas holiday lay off, picking up a crisp 62-35 win over Carroll County (Va.) in the Granite City Classic on Monday night.
In the first quarter, Mount Airy jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, scoring the games first nine points sparked by Maggie McKee scoring five of her game high 12 during the early run.
Things were the opposite for the visitors from Carroll County, who wouldnt get on the scoreboard until 2:48 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the game went back-and-forth with Carroll picking up their scoring. Despite the second quarter run, the Bears took a 34-18 advantage into the break.
Mount Airy used a 21-6 run in between the third and fourth quarters to break things wide open and put away their opponents. During the run the Bears would connect on four of their teams seven three pointers.
After the game, Mount Airy head coach Howard Mayo had nothing but good things to say about his teams shooting in the win.
We played very unselfish and shot the ball really well tonight. Mayo said. When we shoot the ball well it really opens up options for us.
Every player on the Bears roster found their way into the scorebook, led by McKees 12 points.
McKee was followed by fellow senior Ellie Case with 11 points and Taylor Hiatt with 10 points.
Mayo had high praise for his teams balanced attack in the victory, saying that when every player on a team scores, it means that it played a good game all around.
We had everybody score tonight and had three in double figures, Mayo said. I think that just goes to show you how balanced a team we are. I really like the way we played tonight.
Kayla Goings led Carroll County with 14 points, followed by Rachel Dalton with 8 points.
