A big Thumbs Up to so many people and organizations involved with the July 4 celebrations in Mount Airy and the surrounding communities. From parades to fireworks, from Declaration of Independence readings to small festivals, it was a good day for anyone wanting to find a way to celebrate the nation’s independence.
To the Surry County NAACP chapter for its plans to take an active role in the Moral Monday protests in Raleigh. Those protests are against widespread General Assembly policies enacted this year that are cutting aid to the poor while also increasing their taxes and, in essence, turning their backs on those in the state most vulnerable to such policies. It is good to see at least some local folks get involved in a meaningful, tangible way.
