PILOT MOUNTAIN — The start of the 2013 season is still a week away, but East Surry’s football team gave the home crowd several reasons to cheer as it hosted a four-team scrimmage Friday night.
The offense put up some points in the first scrimmage with Lincolnton, while the defense recovered three fumbles: Tra’von Ricketts and Jerry Galloway fell on balls in the backfield, while Casey Marion later scooped up a bouncing ball and raced for a defensive touchdown.
On the first score of the evening, quarterback John Dickenson dropped back to pass at about the 40-yard line. A defender came free and nearly sacked Dickenson, but the senior twisted free near the 45. Dickenson curled to the right side and raced up the sideline for a 35-yard TD.
Junior QB Jon Snow provided a couple of long TD throws against the Wolves. He found Jakob Todd on a 35-yard pass to the right corner of the end zone. Then he lofted a 25-yard pass into Chase Brewster in the left corner.
While Todd caught a scoring pass, Assistant Coach David Johnson was just as excited with the young receiver for executing a slant pass perfectly.
“He went and got it with his hands out in front of his body, instead of trying to trap it against his body,” said Johnson. “That’s what I’m trying to get my receivers to do in practice.”
After a short break, the Wolves slid over to the other end of the stadium to scrimmage Ashe County, while the Cards took on Bunker Hill.
The Bears return 10 of 11 starters on defense and looked like a strong unit.
Bunker Hill’s front four shut down most of the inside runs. Hurried snaps and handoffs resulted in several loose balls hitting the turf.
With some big players on the offensive line (like Devon Harris at 6-foot-3, 270 pounds), the Bears had success moving the ball against the Cards, too.
While the varsity teams scrimmaged in the football stadium, the JV teams used the baseball field.
The Cards open the season at Surry Central in what is now a nonconference game. The home opener is a week later against Starmount.
