Mount Airy whipped Atkins in tennis Thursday for an easy 9-0 win.
The Lady Bears won the six singles matches by a combined 72-3 score. Then they won all three doubles matches by 24-1. Altogether, the Bears took 96 of 100 games against their new conference foe.
The Bears are now part of the new Northwest Conference with Atkins, East Surry, North Stokes, Bishop McGuinness, Walkertown and Winston-Salem Prep.
Walkertown doesn’t have a tennis team, and Mount Airy and East Surry didn’t know until the last minute that Atkins and Prep do have squads this year.
Mount Airy is the two-time defending state champion, but it won’t get many chances to improve itself against quality opponents in the league. Bishop and East Surry look to be their only good matches.
In this match, Davi Barbour won 6-1, 6-2 over Atkins’ top player. Coach Scott Kniskern didn’t provide any names for the Atkins team.
Barbour’s three losses were the only ones in singles play. The other five players won 6-0, 6-0.
Those players were Haley Thomas as the second seed, Bree Hughes at third, Jai Daniels at fourth, Carley VanHoy at fifth and Bailey Jackson at sixth.
Barbour and Thomas didn’t play doubles.
Hughes and Vanhoy won 8-1. Daniels and Abby Hagwood won 8-0, and Jackson and Cheyenne Rhodes won 8-0.
On Monday, the Bears travel to North Surry.
