KERNERSVILLE — East Surry went into a 4A school’s home gym and pulled out a five-set volleyball win Wednesday.
The Lady Cardinals took the first two sets, but the East Forsyth Lady Eagles won two straight to force a fifth set. The Cards pulled that one out 15-9.
The match started off well, said Coach Caleb Gilley. The first two sets were close, but the Cards had a few things go their way, he said.
East won 25-21 and 25-22.
Serving was a big part of the night, Gilley pointed out. Kacie Markle served up nine aces, including six in one run during the second set.
Even more surprising is that with her hard serves, Markle still went a perfect 30/30 in accuracy.
“I thought Kacie, Gabi Jessup and Jessi Marion all I thought did a fantastic job of serving,” he said.
Jessup was a perfect 14/14 with one ace, and Marion went 13/13.
In the third and fourth sets, the teams looked pretty evenly matched, but a few things bounced the Eagles’ way that time, Gilley said. East Forsyth won two sets 25-22 and 25-19.
In the fifth frame, the Cards got on a hot streak and pulled away, he described.
East Forsyth was a pretty scrappy opponent, he said. They had two really good middles and a good outside hitter. The middles hit the ball as hard as anyone Gilley has seen this season.
The outside hitter was smart with hits and tips, finding holes, he added.
In addition to her serving, Markle led the team with 15 kills to go with 12 digs.
Sydney Mosley led the team with 15 digs, while Jesse Barr had 10. Cheyenne Kota, Kristel Hicinbothem and Olivia Sheets had five each.
Jessup had nine kills and two blocks. Kota had four kills and three aces. Hicinbothem had 10 kills, three blocks and three aces. Marion had 11 kills and three blocks.
Sheets had four kills, two blocks and 45 assists.
East Surry will hold Senior Night today against Walkertown. The match will start after the JV game at about 6 p.m.
