WINSTON-SALEM — East Surry’s volleyball team advanced to the final of the Northwest Conference Tournament with a 3-1 win over Bishop McGuinness Tuesday night.

In the first of two matches at Atkins High School, the Lady Cardinals lost the first set, but came back to win three straight over the Lady Villains.

“I thought we came out flat, very flat,” said Coach Caleb Gilley. “Defensively, we were really good, but offensively we were very bad. We finished set one with nine hitting errors.”

“It doesn’t matter if your defense is good if you can’t side out,” he said.

The Cards didn’t give up and pulled out a 25-22 second set to tie the match 1-1.

“Set three was back and forth,” said Gilley.

The Villains had a late lead of 22-19, but East Surry rallied.

The Cards got the serve back to make it 22-20, then Jesse Barr hit an ace to cut the lead to one. The next serve was another good effort and forced Bishop to scramble and “free ball” it back over, the coach said.

East made Bishop pay for the easy ball, and that tied it at 22-all.

The teams continued to battle, and it was East Surry that came out on top 29-27.

That win seemed to give the Cards a boost and deflated the Villains some, the coach believed.

East’s serving came on strong in the fourth set and took Bishop out of their offense. The Cards won 25-15.

Atkins will host the conference final at 6 p.m. today between East Surry and North Stokes.
