DOBSON — Last year’s financial report highlights the agenda when the Surry County Board of Commissioners meets for its regular monthly meeting Monday.
The meeting will get under way at 6 p.m., in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room of the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.
During the meeting, Erica Brown of Martin, Starnes and Associates, will present findings from last year’s audit. The firm is an independent auditor hired by the county as required by state law.
According to Betty Taylor, assistant county manager for budget and finance, the report is an annual requirement.
“This is the auditor’s report to the governing board,” she said Friday. “(Brown) will present last year’s finances for the year ending June 30.”
Taylor said she expects only good news.
“We had a good year last year and the audit will be favorable,” she said confidently.
In addition to the audit report, commissioners are also set to hold a public hearing on a proposal to rezone a 24-acre tract located on Gene Hill Road from rural agricultural to highway business.
The proposal has been proffered by Tommy Brintle, who owns adjacent property and wants to use it as a parking lot for trucks.
During an August hearing on the proposal, nearby property owner Ray Smith said the right of way for the property is directly across the road from his property, and expressed concerns that the rural, dead-end road would be used by tractor trailers for access to the lot.
After the board sent it back to county planners for scrutiny, Smith’s concerns have been alleviated, said County Planner Kim Bates.
“The planning board unanimously recommends approval,” Bates wrote in a proposal to commissioners. “This citizen is now satisfied that the rezoning as proposed would protect the quality of life in the Gene Hill Road neighborhood.”
Bates is also expected to update the board on his department’s Natural Resources Committee’s activities.
Following the update, commissioners are expected to receive an update from Partners Behavioral Health.
