PILOT MOUNTAIN —Mount Airy turned Saturday’s game against Elkin into a track meet, winning 74-45 in the Thanksgiving Invitational at East Surry High School.
Clay Mounce scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds for the Bears, who had five players reach double-figures.
Isiah Simmons scored 12 points, Carson Mounce had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Dylan Gallimore had 10.
Mount Airy blitzed Elkin with a 24-point first quarter and led 44-25 at the break.
“We got our first-game jitters out (Friday) night. We got in some foul trouble early but got a lot of energy off the bench from Isiah Simmons and Isaiah King,” Coach Levi Goins of Mount Airy said. “Clay Mounce got in foul trouble. He had a big night.”
The Bears (2-0) were able to score a ton of points in transition in Saturday’s game. Elkin was able to slow Mount Airy down with a zone defense in the second half. The Buckin’ Elks pulled to within 12 points late in the game, but Gallimore hit back-t0-back 3-pointers to give Mount Airy some breathing room.
Kody King had 25 points for Elkin to lead all scorers.
“I was more pleased with our effort tonight. We’ve got a lot to learn defensively,” Goins said. “We are in the toughest 1A conference in the state.”
Mount Airy will host Elkin on Tuesday night.
