North Surry overpowered Martinsville (Va.) early and ran away with a 72-40 win on Friday in the Mount Airy Christmas Classic.
Malaya Johnson had a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Greyhounds (6-5). Maggie and Morgan Hawks also hit double figures for North, with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Johnson scored 14 of her 16 in the first half and Maggie Hawks had eight points in the first quarter. Hawks also had five assists and four steals. North led 17-6 after the first and 35-12 at halftime.
No one for the Bulldogs could handle the 6-foot-2 Johnson, who dished out four assists on the night as well.
North coach Shane Slate said prior to the game that his team has struggled to find consistency through its first 10 games. Friday’s victory was a step in the right direction.
“I feel like we did a much better job of making good decisions,” Slate said. “We wanted to make sure we were attacking the basket and not settling for what the defense gives us.”
North’s aggressiveness offensively was evident in its decisive edge at the foul line. The Greyhounds were 24 of 34 at the line while the Bulldogs hit just 8 of 26.
The Greyhounds had good looks in transition and in the halfcourt — shooting 54 percent for the game. North didn’t let up in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 24-11. Eleven players got in the scorebook for North, which had its highest scoring output of the season. North averages 46 points per game.
Brittany Turner led the team with 13 points. Jalexus Mitchell added 12 and Kemoni Thomas finished with 11 for Martinsville (Va.), which dropped to 1-5. The Bulldogs are a Class 2A team in a region with Floyd County, Glenvare, Giles and James River.
Slate said playing unfamiliar teams in holiday tournaments gives his team a good preview of the state playoffs later in the season.
North will take on the Australian travel team in the Christmas Classic today at 1:30 p.m. The Greyhounds open conference play at West Stokes on Jan. 3.
