DOBSON —The county’s board of commissioners is set to hear an update on efforts to improve residents’ health Monday night.

The update is expected as the board meets for its regularly-scheduled meeting at 6 p.m., in the commissioner’s meeting room of the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.

Following an open forum for public comment, the board is expected to hear from Maggie Simmons, public information officer for the Surry County Health and Nutrition Center.

Simmons is scheduled to present an annual report on the State of the County’s Health.

During her presentation, Simmons is expected to highlight efforts to improve child safety and injury prevention, healthy aging, diabetes prevention, obesity prevention, substance abuse prevention, infant safety and access to care.

Following Simmons’ address to the board, economic development issues will highlight the agenda.

Todd Tucker, president of the Surry County Economic Development Partnership, is expected to present an update on his department’s economic development efforts to the board.

Commissioner Larry Phillips, who chairs the state association of county commissioners’ economic development committee, will update the board on some state economic development issues.

Following the economic development updates, the board is expected to recognize Timmy Sawyers, who has been named the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month.
