In an apparent case of deja vu, the growing field for a vacant seat on the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners now includes two former candidates for that position.
As of Friday afternoon, five city residents had expressed interest in the job through an open application process approved by the board on Jan. 16.
The latest to do so were Bruce Springthorpe and Ken Klamfoth, who joined three previous applicants for the at-large seat on the council. They included Jim Armbrister, a retired community services officer with the Mount Airy Police Department; Allen Burton, a former member of the Mount Airy Board of Education; and Gail Proffitt, who operates a cleaning business.
Both Springthorpe and Proffitt were unsuccessful candidates for the city’s at-large seat in the 2011 municipal election, which was won by Scott Graham. He died on Jan. 2 after a year-long battle with cancer, forcing the process to select Graham’s replacement for the two years remaining in his term.
Biographical information from a candidate profile in 2011 listed Springthorpe as self-employed in the computer database-development field and as the founder of Southdata Inc. in Mount Airy.
Klamfoth, meanwhile, has been in the public eye recently as the leader of the Mount Airy Recycling Advisory Committee, a group formed to increase participation in the city’s curbside-recycling program that was launched two years ago.
He is the vice president and owner of AdvantaClean of the Triad.
Applications for the commissioner vacancy will continue to be accepted until next Friday at 5 p.m. The process is open to all residents of the city limits due to the at-large nature of the seat involved.
A notice can be given in person at the Municipal Building on South Main Street or in the form of an email, fax or regular mail, and should state that the candidate is willing to become a commissioner if appointed.
Notices can be mailed to the Municipal Building at 300 S. Main St., Mount Airy, NC, 27030, to the attention of the city clerk or deputy clerk.

During the Feb. 20 commissioners meeting, all applicants will be allowed to speak for up to 10 minutes to summarize their qualifications and explain why they want to serve on the board.
The council also will have an opportunity to ask them questions. This will be followed by the commissioners making choices on a tally sheet. The person who receives the majority of the votes will win the seat, with a tie-breaking procedure included in the process.
That individual will be sworn in to Graham’s unexpired term during another meeting on March 6.
