Three of the four area boys teams will be on the road for the first round on Monday night.
In the boys Class 1A Midwest region, No. 6 East Surry (20-6) will host No. 11 Union Academy (11-11) at 7 p.m. The Cardinals finished as the No. 2 seed in the tough Northwest 1A Conference this season. Union was the third best team in the Yadkin Valley Conference. East had a four-game win streak snapped in the conference tournament championship game, losing to two-time defending state champion Winston-Salem Prep.
No. 12 Mount Airy (15-9) will travel to No.5 North Stanly (15-7), another Yadkin Valley Conference team, for its opening round game.
WS Prep received a No. 2 seed and hosts No. 15 West Columbus, while Bishop McGuinness comes in as a No. 8 seed and will host Roxboro Community College.
In the Class 2A West region, No. 19 Surry Central (13-10) will visit No. 14 Forest Hills (12-10) for a first round game, and No. 28 North Surry (10-12) travels to Gastonia to play to No. 5 Hunter Huss (18-4).
Western Piedmont Conference tournament champion West Stokes, which defeated Carver by 20 points in the tournament finals, received a No. 6 seed and will host East Burke. Carver has a home game against Central Academy and South Stokes has a tough first-round match-up at No. 2 seed Shelby.
On the girls side, three of the area teams will host first round games on Monday.
In the girls Class 2A West region, North Surry (18-6) received a No. 9 seed and hosts No. 24 Newton-Conover (12-10). The Lady Greyhounds are the hottest team in the area, winners of nine straight and 13 of the last 14 games. North is coming off a 59-47 victory against county rival Surry Central in the Western Piedmont Conference tournament championship game.
The Lady Eagles, who finished as co-conference champions during the regular season, also play at home in their first-round game. No. 13 Central (18-6) will host No. 20 Maiden (13-9). Newton-Conover and Maiden both play in the Southern District 7 Conference.
In the Class 1A West region, No. 8 Mount Airy (19-5) opens at home against No. 9 Chatham Central (13-9). The Lady Bears finished third in the brutal Northwest 1A Conference, a league that boasts eight-time defending state champ Bishop McGuinness, along with much-improved Winston-Salem Prep and Atkins teams.
No. 14 East Surry (9-14) will be on the road against No. 3 West Montgomery (16-2).
