DOBSON — Career Services Coordinator Rachel Hiatt and Career Opportunities and Workforce Advancement Coordinator Erica Smith agreed participants in this year’s Surry Community Job Fair were more focused than previous years.
“I am so pleased with the turnout,” said Hiatt, only a half hour into the fair. “One participant I just finished talking with said he has three prospects. He had been attending a lot of our workshops and put his best foot forward here. I think it’s going to really benefit him. I have seen a lot of others making an impression so these employers will have a good idea of the face that goes with the resume.”
Hiatt said in addition to a larger number of participants dressing professionally, she had seen less people wandering in the fair. She said employers and applicants appeared engaged and were spending more time talking with each other.
“I was really impressed this year with the excitement of our students,” Smith said. “We had a line when we opened the doors this morning as the employers came in to set up. I hadn’t seen that before. It was 9 (a.m.).”
Both Hiatt and Smith emphasized their offices are open other times besides during job fair events on the Dobson campus.
“This is not the only time of the year we are here to help,” Hiatt said. “We’re open to everyone and are there to help those enter or re-enter the workforce and we are also here as well to help businesses.” The two said they are seeing job seekers getting more serious by prepping before graduation while others are seeking work because unemployment benefits are running out.
The two encouraged local job seekers to use CollegeCentral.com/surry, which is the school’s online job board which offers job listing, resume creation, job search tips as well as build, update and forward an online career portfolio to employers. Hiatt pointed out all of the companies in this fair were hiring. She said the college will next have employers evaluate the job fair for feedback so future fairs approach may be adjusted to help meet their interests. A wide range of professions will be represented ranging from law enforcement, fire and rescue, health care, banking, manufacturing, senior care, child care and even retail such as Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Companies participating in the fair included The Greensboro Fire Department, Mount Airy Police Department, Mount Airy Fire Department, Surry County, Workforce Carolina, Willow Tex LLC, WIFM Radio, Weller & Company, Wayne Farms, United Hospice, Surry Workforce Center, National Guard, Northern Hospital of Surry County, Pittsburgh Glass Works, LLC, Prism Medical Products, Rainbow Child Care Center, Reynolda Manufacturing solutions, Ridgecrest Retirement, MVP Group International, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Leonard Buildings and Truck Accessories, Insteel Industries, Home Instead Senior Care, Central States Manufacturing, Central Continuing Care and BB &T.
