No injuries were reported in connection with an early morning fire Thursday morning which destroyed a single story home on Old Pond Road, off of White Pines Country Club Road in Surry County.

According to Franklin Volunteer Fire Department Chief Johnny Hiatt, the call for the fire came in around 5:31 a.m. from a neighbor whose property adjoins the secluded wooded area at the top of a steep, private drive. Hiatt speculated a 100-gallon propane tank, which vented because of the heat, drew attention to the blaze with a loud noise.

He said crews arriving on the scene minutes later found the structure fully involved with damage from the fire leaving what appeared to be 2x4 sized joists in the roof exposed. Hiatt said the home was not occupied at the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Surry County Fire Marshal’s office. Hiatt said authorities are trying to identify the owner of the property for notification and suggested the owner may be a tractor-trailer driver not currently in the area.

Units responding to the fire included Franklin, Bannertown, Cana, Pine Ridge, White Plains and Flat Rock Volunteer Fire Departments as well as the Surry County Fire Marshal and Surry County Emergency Medical Services.
