The Surry Runnin’ Patriots had four players in this year’s N.C. Home Educators Athletic Commission East-West All-Star Game, held Memorial Day weekend at Piedmont International University in Winston-Salem.

Jessica Boyd, Sydney Bedsaul, Kaylee Paris and Kelsey Cave were selected by coaches to play for the West team, which won 43-41.

The West trailed 19-17 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 6-0 run and held on for the two-point victory.

Bedsaul had a big three-point play in the third quarter. Boyd scored four of her eight points during Surry’s pivotal third-quarter run. She also finished with six rebounds. Paris had four points, three rebounds, six steals and one assist. Cave grabbed two rebounds.

Bedsaul, who moved from shooting guard to point guard before the season, said she was honored to be selected for the All-Star Game.

“It’s something I’ve been looking forward to doing since I started playing,” Bedsaul said. “I got to play with three other (Surry) teammates. Any of us couldn’t have done it without the whole team. Everybody’s got their strengths.”

Surry coach Todd Hill said it was Boyd’s second time being picked for the All-Star Game. Bedsaul, Paris and Cave were first-time selections. Hill coached the West All-Stars.

The East team hit a couple of 3-pointers late in the game, and had possession with five seconds left. But Hill said the West team made a good defensive stand at the end.

“The kids did a good job playing together,” Hill said. “We spread the floor out there really well.”

The Volleyball All-Star Game, 3-Point Shooting Contest and Boys Basketball All-Star Game were also held May 23.

Surry posted a 20-12 record this season — going 3-3 at the East Coast Homeschool Basketball Championship at Liberty University in March. Bedsaul, Paris, Cave, and Boyd were all-conference players.
