Area law enforcement are seeking the whereabouts of a Mount Airy woman they believe robbed a bank in the city Thursday afternoon.

According to Chief Dale Watson of the Mount Airy Police Department, the incident occurred at 5:02 p.m., at the Surrey Bank and Trust on West Pine Street.

“Bank personnel reported that a white female entered the bank and approached one of the tellers,” Watson said. “She passed a note indicating a robbery and demanded money.”

The suspect was described as having her hair in a ponytail, a gap between her front teeth and wearing a black shirt.

She reportedly left the scene in a red pickup truck driven by a white male with black hair.

Police say no weapon was visible during the incident, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken.

Through a subsequent investigation by members of the Mount Airy Police Department and the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect was identified as April Elizabeth Johnson, 34, of 635 Fish River Church Road in Mount Airy.

Watson reported that an arrest warrant has been issued for Johnson charging her with common law robbery.

Anyone with information about Johnson’s whereabouts is asked to call the Mount Airy Police Department at 336-786-3535.
