DOBSON — Surry County Schools have received the Middle School District Cup for medium-sized school districts from the North Carolina Association of Scholastic Activities (NCASA).
According to Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jill Reinhardt, the system joined the NCASA this year. The organization allows schools across the state to compete in scholastic events which promote intellectual achievement and excellence.
Competitions the Surry County schools participate in includes Quiz Bowl, Battle of the Books, show choir, art showcase, MathCounts and the Science Olympiad. She said she joined with the County Board of Education in recognizing school principals and coaches for “spending countless hours preparing students for the events, which are most often on Saturdays and after school hours.”
She said one of the many factors contributing to the award was all of the middle and high schools participating and said the award is similar to athletic competition cups such as the Capital Bank Cup and the Wells Fargo Cup.
“We had schools winning regional and state competitions. For a district our size, I feel we had the largest competitive rate with more schools at events than others,” said Reinhardt. “We are pleased our students are choosing scholastic competitive events and have multiple opportunities to be involved in academics as well as athletic competitions.”
Coaches involved in academic team competition include Lisa Creed, Brandi Joyce, Greg Easter, Lisha High, Phyllis Watson, Shannon Snow, Heather Coe Grant, Kim Davis, Melissa Whitfield, Jennifer Via, Karen Hodges, Jennifer Allen, Amy Edwards, Nathan Nichols, Alicia McCormick, Tammy Bullington, Jennifer Riska, Courtney Goin, Bradley Baldwin, Chris Sizemore, Cassie Wallace and Rene Mosley.
Other coaches honored by the board were Claire Spell, Wendy Cartwright, Amanda Streetman, Janna Blakeney, Byron Voigt, Dorothy Sullivan, Bryan Hall, Terry Collins, Becky Critz, Cebby Diamont, Jennifer Draughn, Tim Shelton, Angie Graham, Jeff Edwards, Jason Brick, Arysta Brick and Stacey Libbert.
Reinhardt said she anticipates the association will add robotics and debate for the 2014-2015 school year and looks for the county teams to be competitive because they are already active in these programs on a local level.
