Powerhouse programs Oak Hill Academy and Hargrave Military Academy will face off at Ron King Gymnasium at North Surry High School on October 28.
Hargrave assistant coach Lee Martin (a North Surry grad) arranged to have the marquee hoops matchup played at North. Tip-off for the October game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
“We’ll have 15-20 Division I players in the gym at once,” Martin said. “I think it’s great we can get it in Surry County. I think Surry County will be excited about it. People love basketball here. People want to see this kind of talent. It’s a great location for both teams.”
Oak Hill is a Baptist-affiliated boarding school located in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. NBA stars that have played for the Warriors include Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Rajon Rondo, Brandon Jennings and Josh Smith. Hargrave Military Academy is a private boarding school in Chatham, Virginia. Hargrave alums in the NBA include David West and Jordan Crawford.
East Surry 2013 grad Scott Meredith, the school’s all-time leading scorer, will play for Hargrave’s post-graduate team against Oak Hill in October.
Martin said the two teams play every year, and the game is typically very competitive. In 2013, Oak Hill won by four points. This year Hargrave’s lineup will include Danjel Purifoy, Alabama’s top-ranked basketball player.
In 2007, Oak Hill scrimmaged Surry Community College’s basketball team in Dobson.
Martin played four years of varsity basketball with the Greyhounds, who reached the 2A Western regional semifinals his junior year (2007). After graduating in 2008, Martin went to Hargrave Military Academy and played under Kevin Keats. Keatts was an assistant coach at Louisville the year the Cardinals won the national title. Keatts is currently the men’s head basketball coach at UNC Wilmington.
From there Martin signed with Catawba College, where he majored in business and played four years for the Indians. He averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game his senior year at Catawba. Last year, he returned to Hargrave as an assistant coach under A.W. Hamilton.
“I love it,” Martin said. “I love where I am, the whole process of getting guys playing at the level we want them to play and watching them sign scholarships.”
In 2013-14, Oak Hill posted a 41-4 record. Hargrave’s post-graduate team went 32-8.
