Technology has proved to be more of a uniting force for those organizing the Mount Airy High School All Classes Reunion.
Organizer Cleve Folger said the event has been scheduled for Oct. 18 at Old North State Winery from 6:30 p.m. to midnight. Even with newfangled networking, the reunion’s core remains classmates sharing memories.
Folger, who said he had organized reunions in previous years decided to take a high tech approach this year and used the “You Know You Grew Up in Mayberry if…” Internet group to get the work out early on.
“I remember it was a real pain to organize the events in 2006 and 2007,” said Folger, from the class of 1967. “Today with Facebook and the Internet I put the word out and got more than 60 responses in the first three days and that got the advertising side started. Rather than searching for people we asked for them to share the links.”
Folger said some MAHS classes have stayed in touch better than others which is why multiple classes were featured in previous events. The new Internet accessibility has allowed them to widen the invitation.
“I just decided to pick up the ball and run with it,” Folger said. “So many of us have been scattered everywhere. This first round has gotten responses from alumni of the early 60s, 80s and even 1996. It’s going to be fun to see all these people. I think a part of why this works is how so many just love to come back to Mount Airy.” He said organizers are also inviting former teachers and school employees to the event.
Folger encouraged interested people to register early so organizers can keep the participation cost down in the $20 range. He said they plan to take advantage of Old North State’s deli offerings for food and refreshments to keep costs lower. Greg Williamson’s BBQ Band will be playing for the event with the MAAA providing hors d’oeuvres.
The BBQ Band repertoire includes Carolina beach music, blues, classic rock, top 40 and some country tunes. The Lexington band typically features Five Guys and a Girl taking turns as vocalists and musicians. Instruments featured include lead and bass guitars, drums,, keyboards, sax and trombone.
