DOBSON — Elections of next year’s officers tops the agenda when the Surry County Board of Commissioners gather for its annual organizational meeting Monday night.

The meeting is scheduled to get under way at 6 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Meeting Room of the Surry County Government Center in Dobson.

Following a call to order, the board will hold a swearing-in ceremony for commissioners Jimmy Miller, Larry Phillips and Paul Johnson, who were tapped for another term during this year’s general election.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, the board will host a ceremony celebrating the life of the late State Sen. Don East, who died unexpectedly on Oct. 22, following complications from a routine surgery.

After the ceremony, the board is expected to elect a new chairman and vice chairman to serve next year. Currently, Commissioner R.F. “Buck” Golding serves as chair, and Commissioner Eddie Harris is serving as vice chair after replacing the late Garry Scearce.

After returning to its regular agenda, the board is expected to hold public hearings on the closure of Butner Road and an as-yet-unnamed economic development project.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the board is expected to recess to the lobby of the County Government Center for a reception honoring the election of Phillips, Miller and Johnson.
