Surry Central’s Nick Coe has been on a tear to start the season. The 152-pound junior, who had a losing record last year, has won all seven matches (six by pin).

WINSTON-SALEM — Surry Central dominated Mount Tabor and Forbush in wrestling, losing only twice in 28 matches.

The Golden Eagles gave up a forfeit at 106 pounds in both matches, then lost just one decision in each meet.

The Eagles won 69-9 over Mount Tabor and 69-8 over Forbush, which lost one point for an unsportsmanlike penalty.

“Our guys came out really focused,” said Coach Stephen Priddy.

The team was down a little from losing to North Surry over the weekend, he said. The boys wanted to come out and wrestle well, he said, and they showed what they can do.

“They were very intense and focused,” he said.

Mount Tabor is a program that has had success over the years. With about 60 kids on the team this year, the future should be bright again.

Right now, however, the Eagles are the far superior team. Five wrestlers got a pin in the first period, and five others earned pins later in their matches.

At 195, Bryant White (currently fourth on Retro Rankings) won 6-2 over Joshua Hernandez, the only decision among the Eagles’ wins.

The only loss came from freshman Hunter White at 182. The close 14-11 decision went to Lamonte Duncan. Hunter received a forfeit win in the Forbush match.

The other freshman starter, Garrett Johnson, received a forfeit from Mount Tabor at 113 and lost a 12-6 decision to Forbush’s Laken Jowers.

Hunter and Garrett have potential, but they are going to need some time to get accustomed to the speed of high school matches, said Priddy. Last year they were wrestling seventh- and eighth-graders, and now they could be facing an 18-year-old man with 100 matches of experience.

In fact, Jowers is a senior and Duncan a junior, so the two were far behind in wrestling experience. Still, Priddy believes these young men will be much better by the end of this season.

Austin Darlington is a sophomore, but he broke his hand last year and didn’t get to participate, noted Priddy. He’s pretty much a freshman, too, but he pinned Mount Tabor’s Jaylin Brown in only 1:05. He received a forfeit against Forbush to go to 2-0.

Surry Central has four wrestlers ranked in the top 12 in the state in the latest Retro Rankings list.

Priddy said he doesn’t care about those lists right now because the only ranking that matters is when the boys are standing up at the podium for the state tournament.

Wes Brown is ranked first for 220 pounds, but he likely won’t wrestle that weight all season since he’s several pounds above that now, the coach noted.

Nathon Bautista is ranked ninth for 106 pounds, and White fourth for 195 pounds. Kevin Pack is just outside the top 10 for 120 lbs. as one of two honorable mentions.

Considering their success last year, the Eagles might soon have three more crack the rankings with Raymond Dance (28 wins last season), Mason Snow (27) and Uriel Secundino (26).
