North Surry honored Kristina Rumplasch at halftime. She scored her 1,000th career point Friday at Carver.
The Lady Bears held a one-point lead to start the fourth quarter, but the Lady Greyhounds took control for a 48-33 win.
Mount Airy slowed down North Surry’s big front line, but a pair of sisters gave the Hounds a lift on the perimeter.
Senior Maddison Hawks and sophomore Morgan Hawks combined for 17 points, including 10 in the decisive fourth quarter.
North held the Bears scoreless for nearly the entire period as Mikayla Seivers hit two free throws with 34.9 seconds left.
By then, the Hounds had turned a 31-30 deficit into a 43-33 lead.
Mount Airy opened the game with a three-pointer, but the Hounds used their inside strength to go up 13-6 with center Malaya Johnson scoring six and forward Erin March adding one inside basket and a three-pointer.
The Bears packed the defense inside and held Johnson scoreless the rest of the way. However, she was able to help feed March and Kristina Rumplasch with high-post passes.
March finished with a game-high 13 points. Rumplasch was scoreless in the first half, but had nine in the second half.
The North Surry lead reached 10 when Morgan Hawks opened the second with a three. However, Kathryn Beasley kept the Bears alive with pull-up jumpers and ignited a 12-0 run that gave Mount Airy an 18-16 lead.
Andi Moore and Symone Simmons both scored in that run, and Beasley had 10 points by halftime as the Bears led 23-19.
To open the second half, the Hound scored three times for a 26-23 lead.
Alex Atkins and Dana Brown hit back-to-back threes as Mount Airy took a 31-30 lead at the end of three periods.
On the last scramble before the buzzer, Johnson went down and stayed on the floor for a couple of minutes before being helped up by Coach Shane Slate. She was holding her right shoulder, but did return later in the fourth.
The Hounds started the final period on a 9-0 run with seven of those points from the Hawks sisters.
Mount Airy then called a timeout with 3:34 left.
Inside two minutes, Maddison Hawks scored for a 41-31 lead. Then March scored with a little more than a minute left for a 12-point cushion, and the Hounds went on to win by 15.
