More than just adults were inside a car police fired into Friday night when it was driven toward them in a threatening manner — the occupants also included two young children.

“There were two minors in the vehicle,” Mount Airy Police Chief Dale Watson said Tuesday regarding an illegal drug transaction that led to a woman being wounded and the car speeding away. “I can confirm the fact that they were there.”

Another source told The Mount Airy News Tuesday that the children were boys, ages 4 and 6, whose mother received a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the incident due to acting as a “human shield” for them. The woman’s identity has not been released.

Her boyfriend, the father of the children, is one of two men who are facing felony charges as a result of the alleged drug transaction that culminated with the officer-involved shooting. Derrick Ray Simmons, 25, was still at large Tuesday on charges of sale or delivery of a Schedule II controlled substance (cocaine) and conspiracy to sell and deliver a Schedule II controlled substance.

A second man in the 2010 Dodge Challenger, identified as its driver, is facing those charges as well as assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, for allegedly trying to run down police, and felony speeding to elude arrest. Joseph Harold Ezekiel, 51, is further accused of resisting, obstructing or delaying a public officer because he attempted to flee from custody after turning himself in to police over the weekend.

The incident unfolded Friday night at the Independence Plaza shopping center on the corner of North Renfro Street and Independence Boulevard, when city police attempted to stop the Challenger believed to have been involved in the illegal drug transaction.

As narcotics detectives Phillip Newman and Alex Ledford approached the vehicle, it was driven toward one of them, according to previous reports.

Chief Watson said Tuesday that the presence in the car of someone other than the adults was known by one of the officers, and in firing his weapon “the action he chose was to preserve his safety and life and possibly the lives of others.”

Watson added that “both of them were placed in the situation of where they thought they were in imminent danger for serious bodily injury.” Each officer fired into the car, previous reports said.

The woman in the Challenger, who was in the rear passenger area along with the children, later showed up at Northern Hospital of Surry County seeking treatment for her wound, and the car was found unoccupied at another Mount Airy location.

Meanwhile, the Department of Social Services is said to be conducting an investigation regarding the children’s presence in the vehicle during alleged illegal narcotics activity.

“I believe social services is involved, but I don’t know to what extent at this point,” the police chief said Tuesday.

“It is a shame that parents place their children in circumstances such as this.”

In keeping with departmental policy, the two narcotics detectives are on paid administrative leave pending the results of an investigation of the officer-involved shooting.

This is what is wrong with this city... people think because the cops shot they did wrong... Would you take your kids on a drug deal? Nope, didn't think so. Do you want to be ran over? Nope, didn't think so. These kids need to be taken away and all 3 needs to have charges against them with child endangerment. ALSO, if I have read correctly, the driver fled with the kids in the car? Is that safe? Nope, didn't think so either! And I'm sure this mom wasn't covering as a shield, she probably used that excuse to make the officers look bad. I believe the MAPD did exactly what they are taught to do in such a situation. For those complaining about what they did, next time your in danger, call a crack head and see if they come and help...Idiots!

NorthSurry2011, Let me tell you something about MAPD, there is a lot of corruption and nonsense going on in this department. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, thus I'm not bashing all police officers. They provide the community with great service and order maintenance. However, this particular department has a few officers that have a lot to cover up! I have tons of incidents that I am referring to. I think the entire situation was wrong! The police were in the wrong as well as these ignorant parents. When you are having a debate with someone, your stupidity shines through with name calling, just allows others to see how unsure you are about your argument.

Of course they did wrong. They could of killed two children, an killed another last month. Aparrently your affiliated with the police also. Of course normal ppl wouldn't bring their kids to a drug deal. It takes a few months to be a police officer and I doubt shooting in a car with kids was in their cericulum. Or wrecking a kid on a curve beside a river. Their are good cops but most are what we've been reading about who like to control others with big egos. It's sad these kids have to go through this (the ones alive) but bottom line u tell me a good reason to wreck a kid or shoot in car with kids. Ur the idiot. Anyone who thinks its ok to wreck a child in a river or shoot near one is ok is the idiot to me.

Classof06, I can understand your concerns. This is a terrible situation. Although, I do not know all the details of this particular incident, I will say that I think that shooting inside a vehicle while children are present, is the wrong way to approach this. However, sometimes there is no time to react or let alone think about what to do when you are in a dangerous situation. The officers should have shot the tires of the vehicle. If this mother, didn't serve as a shield these children would more than likely be in critcial condition. These parents should lose all rights, and why not release the name of this pathetic excuse for a mother? Other names are released in the paper daily, names of people charged (not even convicted) thus this is bogus. All in all, this is a terrible situation but I will agree with classof06 for the most part, just for the mere fact that there were children involved. Take the children out of the scenario, and shoot away!

It is past time for these 2 Rambos to hit the unemployment line! And before one starts name calling, I say this as the daughter of a former Sheriff and a retired LEO myself! WHY not get a warrant and serve it later rather than endanger EVERY shopper and customer in that shopping center as well as all passersby? These 2 Rambos egos could have cost any number of people their lives! What MAPD did here is indefensible!

To Fancygap1; Give the good guys a break and reserve your judgement until the facts are in. Personally, I am more concerned about the fact that the protection of the children has been left to the DSS, rather than our law enforcement personnel in a case like this. Our DSS does a great job; but when it comes to parents putting kids in the line of fire, our law enforcement personnel and local prosecutor should be really aggressive in using every charge possible to allow the judge to punish adults who are indifferent to their own children's protection.

classof06, you're an idiot! You think you know all of the details of these instances but obviously you do not!! Plain and simple, if you knowingly break the law and put other people in danger, you and you alone are responsible! Maybe if officers would shoot a little more, one may think twice about selling or buying frugs in Mt. Airy! Chief Watson and the Mt. Airy Police Department perform jobs well done and we should all be thankful for them every single day!

I know for a fact the dad spoke to officers an told him the daughter would stop. An yes I do know a lot of details. U must be offiliated with the police to say such ignorant things. An immature to call names. If ur offended then I don't know what to tell u other than get the facts strait. U say if u break the law u should get shot at? Did u forget that these are babies were talking about. I sure its in the police officer handbook somewhere the protical u take. But I know I sure as heck wouldn't wreck a nine yr old around a curve with her bby brother in the car or open fire in a car with children inside. The kids in this incident are lucky an the lil boy from last month would still be alive if if they weren't wrecked. I think the police are undertrained underpaid an trigger happy.

You are indeed an Idiot. Not your children who were shot at or crashed in a river and gone at 9 yrs. old. You may think different if it were. Small time drug dealing is terrible but it shouldnt cost a child its life. Its not the death penality. Taking your parents car out at 15 yrs old is bad, but knowing who was driving and knowing a nine year old is in the car and chasing them all over town and choosing to wreck them in a terrible curve next to a river is THE WORST JUDGMENT I have ever heard of by a police officer. Who did he protect? A dead 9 year old doesn't seem like great protection. It's scary that we have these types officers in Mt. Airy so willing to use lethal force for minor crimes. Do you wonder why people don't trust the Police. Have you noticed when investigated it is always found to be "Justified" or ok. Its the brotherhood of the police. Criminals are terrible and deserve what they get. But that 9 Yrar old boy was NOT a criminal. He is safe in Gods hands now. Young people make mistakes, but shouldn't die for them at the hands of the Police. To eager to use lethal force!!! You want officers to shoot a little more, what if it were YOUR innocent family member that gets caught up in it. I think you might feel differently. I walked up to a city Police Officer several months ago in the parking lot of Moodys where I had attended a funeral. He was going to lead the procession and I wanted to thank him for his help and respect. As he spoke the young officer looked up at me and cursed and said I don't have time to speak. Young arogant and very disrespectful, great way to represent your department!!!! So be thankful and maybe this type of thing can continue. And yes you are indeed an IDIOT !!!!!

How many ppl r the cops gonna shoot at and kill in this town before someone says anything. Why would u shoot inside a car with children. It makes me sick. Now I see why no info was released till now. Had to come up with cover up. They get angry bc they take off an see as a challenge an play cat mouse. I guess bc their so used to being in control. Why not shoot tires. An shooting tires is a horrible idea also. The child who was killed along with his sister should still be alive tday. Her father was on phone with cops and her while she was driving an told officers she would stop if they quit chasing. Do they quit chasing? No they pull pivot munuver around a sharp turn beside a river. Thank god the children in this incident were ok

For one thing how many people could the girl have killed other than her brother drivng like a maniac on the road if they wouldnt have stopped her same for the druggies. And im sorry but i have kids to come home to so if someone is coming at me with a car uh ima shoot to maybe not in the car but yea tires would have been good enough depending on how long it would have taken for the car to stop after u shot tires. Both cases are very sad stories especially the brother and sister. I know that family personally and my heart goes out to them but you really need to look at these situations. There are families and innocent kids out there minding their business and if cops wouldnt have stopped them or at least tried then how many more would be dead. All i can say is what is this world coming to.

OK, let me get this right. Adults brought kids along on a drug run that ended with the use of lethal force and a gunshot injury. So the reason all of the adults were not charged with child endangerment is..................
