Dr. Elliot Engel
A world-renowned lecturer will be in Surry County to present a program on a much-maligned historical figure with North Carolina ties.
The Surry Arts Council is hosting Dr. Elliot Engel as he presents the lecture, “Blackbeard: The North Carolinian Nobody Knew.”
The lecture is set for 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Trio Restaurant, located in the Main-Oak Emporium at the corner of Main and Oak streets in Mount Airy.
During the lecture, Engel will explore the life and legend of the pirate with North Carolina ties, whose fearsome image and reputation allowed him to commandeer a ship “by simply climbing aboard.”
Engel is originally from Indianapolis, Ind., but resides in Raleigh, where he has taught at the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University and Duke University.
He received his master’s degree and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned the school’s Outstanding Teacher Award.
Engel has penned 10 books that have been published in England, Japan and the U.S. He also was featured on PBS television, where he presented a mini-lecture series on Charles Dickens.
