PINEHURST — Two Bishop McGuinness golfers finished in the top six at a winter golf tournament at Pinehurst over the weekend.

Playing Course Five, sophomore Jonathon Davis was second, just a stroke off the pace with a two-day total of 160. He shot 84 on the first day, then improved to 76 on day two.

David Rabil, Fairfax, Va., shot a 159 to win the underclassmen golf tournament that featured 19 high school golfers from four states.

Bishop freshman Kevin Sowinksi was tied for sixth place at 167, just eight strokes behind the leader.

He shot 83 on the first day (tied for fourth) and 84 on the second day.

In the upperclassmen division, Clemmons golfer Joseph Cansler won first place with a 148. The home-schooled athlete shot 75 and 73 to win by three strokes.

Course Five, designed by Ellis Maple, is a par-72 layout at 6,640 yards.

This was the fifth offseason event hosted by Pinehurst Golf Course. The next will be on Course Six on Feb. 2-3.

Davis and Sowinski have each participated in three of the five events, but still are ranked eighth and ninth overall in series points.
